What Exactly Does “Deep Clean” Mean?

Many businesses are announcing that they are undergoing a commercial “deep clean” due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak. Numerous businesses are beginning to step up their cleaning protocols to help stop the spread of germs. While cleaning for Coronavirus is not that different from cleaning and disinfecting for other viruses – like those that cause the flu or a common cold – industries are tailoring their cleaning in keeping with what makes sense for them. Public health officials suggest a few common steps that can be used by businesses:

  • Increasing the frequency of cleaning
  • Using disinfectant products that federal officials say are effective
  • Cleaning “high touch” points
  • Making hand sanitizer readily available

There is no universal protocol for a “deep clean” of highly trafficked public or commercial spaces to eradicate the Coronavirus. The key to slowing the spread of COVID-19 hinges on good hygiene practices.

Deep cleaning is not a scientific concept and likely mean something different to individual businesses. The CDC has issued guidelines for community facilities that have had people with suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19. It recommends that “high touch” surfaces be disinfected daily. However, not all forms of infection control are the same. Disinfectants kill or inactive germs on a surface. Cleaning can remove – but inactivate – viruses.

The Environmental Protection Agency has released a list of registered cleaning products that work against hardier germs and are presume to be good options to fight COVID-19.

Businesses, government entities and other groups are responding in different ways. Many schools are shutting their doors to students, and promising to clean their facility to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
