Cleaning and Disinfecting – Cold and Flu Season

cold and flu season

It is that time of year again – cold and flu season. The cold and flu season brings its own set of challenges to your office, gym, school or favorite restaurant.  Luckily, there are cleaning and disinfecting regimens that can help promote a healthy and safe environment for your workplace or a place that you and your family frequent.

Cleaning and disinfecting procedures is an approach used to control the spread of germs or other infectious diseases. Traditional cleaning is essential and the first step to ensure proper disinfection.  For a disinfectant to kill a virus or bacteria on a surface, the surface must first be clean of oils and debris – if not the disinfectant cannot do its job effectively. One of the most important places to frequently disinfect is a high touch point surface such as door handles, countertops, handrails, elevator buttons, faucets, etc. Increasing the frequency of disinfecting will help stop the spread of germs when using the appropriate EPAregistered chemicals and adhering to manufacturer guidelines.

While proper cleaning and disinfecting are effective in reducing the spread of infectious diseases, the CDC reminds us that our own actions can also help stop the spread of germs. Below are tips from the CDC:

  • Avoid contact with people who are sick
  • If sick, limit contact with others
  • Cover your sneezes and coughs
  • Use proper handwashing techniques
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth
